Diary from the teambuilding course in Bydgoszcz, Poland
Participants: Teachers from the Polish school in Bydgoszcz and the Danish school in Haderslev

Monday 08.11.99

We arrived at the school in the morning, and everything was ready. Our partners were Ryszard, IT-teacher, Joanna, English teacher and Andrzej, head of the machine department. We were welcomed at the headmaster’s office and afterwards we went to the classroom, where we were going to spend the next two weeks. We started going through the programme and a few changes had to be made. The 11th of November is the national day in Poland, but our partners would be at work this day because of our project. The technique seemed to work, as it should. The ISDN line was there an analogue modem had just been installed, and we opened e-mail no.1.

E-mail no.1 was ready and after instructions in using the digital camera we took a walk around the school taking pictures for the presentation.

Back in the classroom we had to start using the first programmes. It caused us a great deal of trouble to reduce and edit the pictures as the programmes were in Polish, in different versions, some used Corel Photo Paint 8,0, others Paint Shop Pro 4.1 and 5.0. We also used Winzip this worked out fine.

The presentations were send to Holding before 4 o’clock. We zipped our files, and they were not too big, but as the technique in Prague didn’t work, we didn’t finish sending our presentations until the following morning.

Evaluation:

We were met with a high level of engagement, and the Polish teachers would do anything to make us feel comfortable and to make everything work.

Tuesday 09.11.99

We started the day with a cup of coffee and had time to go through the programme of the day. After that we opened e-mail no.2. We were asked to send our presentations to our co-operators. This worked out fine in Poland and Italy, but the team in Prague had big technical problems, which meant that we had to use the fax to send all the presentations to all the partners. This took a very long time.

After this we were to start using the videoconference. Our Polish colleagues already knew the system, and during the next hours we had a chance to talk to all our co-operators, which was a good experience.

After the coffee break, we started looking for e-mail no. 3. It wasn’t there. We tried to call the Holding company both by videoconference and mobile phone, but had no luck. After having waited a long time we received e-mail no.3. In Poland we had a feeling that nothing really happened.

After a break we started making the necessary agreements with our partners concerning dimensions on the cube. The negotiations were still running as the day ended, and it can not be finished until Wednesday.

From time to time the videoconference was misused a little. It is important that people know what they want to talk about before they make a call. Otherwise other partners get too much waiting time.

Evaluation:

Again today we found a high level of engagement and high spirit, everybody help each other and problems are there to be solved.
